What a fabulous day of fun we had at the City of San Gabriel Play Day event!!

Many thanks to all those who stopped by the SEF book distribution and activities booth to say hello. We enjoyed the sounds of giggles as youth visitors played pin the tail on the dinosaur. Then with a dinosaur themed bandana in hand the youth headed straight to the book distribution table to receive their gift of literature with smiles on their faces!!

Distributing over 700 pieces of literature and 500 bandanas to eager readers has never been more fun!!

Booth #1 – Together with the Southern California Chinese Environmental Protection Association and Geosyntec Consultants, we invite you to stop by the Youth Engineers for a Green Future program booth to learn more about this exciting mentor-based program from the middle school participants themselves. Calling ALL Youth & Alumni Ages 16-22! The Pasadena Tournament of Roses will be hosting a student empowerment and networking event titled, #ThisGEN presented by META!

#ThisGen2023: A Youth Empowerment Forum presented by META will be held this Saturday, April 22, 2023. The Pasadena Tournament of Roses® event, which features industry leaders and thought-provoking panel discussions, is designed to engage Southern California youth and inspire them to be courageous, confident and intentional with the choices that impact their future. There will be a resource fair with internship & job opportunities, a VR activation in the METAVERSE, and complimentary breakfast and lunch, all FREE of charge! SEF Continues to Celebrate a Special Group of SGUSD Super Stars ~ The Teachers!!

We have said this before, each and every school day there are almost 300 amazing SGUSD teachers who are rising to the growing challenges in education. It is through their unique teaching styles, confidence and sense of responsibility they strive to make a positive impact in the lives of approximately 4,600 students on 8 school campuses. To each of these teachers, on behalf of the entire community, please know we appreciate your courage, patience, dedication, hard work, passion and commitment to teaching so much so that we are motivated and inspired to continue to celebrate and support you and all that you do.

Thanks to the generous support of Schools First Credit Union, and our community partners Paris Baguette, we have been provided with the privilege to recognize all that these amazing group of individuals do with a $10 gift card to Paris Baguette. This time around we were even able to increase the impact and expand the recognition program to ALL credentialled staff on each of the sites…yes, we just said that!!

The heart of a community was in full swing on Satu

The heart of a community was in full swing on Saturday and we are still smiling!!

On Sunday, March 25, SEF celebrated the youth artists of the Read. Imagine. Design. Event during a prize distribution event held at Paris Baguette, San Gabriel and it sure was fun!! All of the artists were invited to stop by the bakery to pick up a personalized gift…a blanket featuring their own individual artwork!!

In addition, Paris Baguette generously supported the distribution event through a fundraiser gifting SEF 50% of the sales generated during the hours of 9-11am. Yes, we just said that!!

What else? Former SEF Board President, Dr. Chasity Jennings Nunez @cjnunezob generously donated 10 tickets to the San Gabriel Kiwanis Club’s Pancake Breakfast being held on Saturday, April 8th. Every guest was invited to fill out a free raffle ticket for a chance to win!!

SEF is incredibly honored to be part of such a wonderful community who values and supports public education. We are especially grateful to the SEF Board Members for developing and organizing such a fun activity where treasured volunteers enjoy serving our youth and our community. Everything came together beautifully and we had so much fun!

Up next? SEF has begun planning for the 2023/2024 event. Excitedly, we have been told once again that the annual event continues to be transformative and impactful in ways we could only imagine and could not be more pleased or more thrilled to get started!!

As you head into the weekend, we invite you to feel the beat and enjoy the sensational dance performance of the Oscar winning song “Naatu Naatu” found on Youtube (link below) ~ To add to the excitement, look for former SEF Dance Instructor Kelly Sweeney who is part of the incredible ensemble to receive a standing ovation after what has been described as one of the most memorable moments from the 2023 Oscars!

Kelly has been a dancer and actress since age 4. She has been featured in many music videos, musicals, and performing on World of Dance with Jennifer Lopez. As a sought-after choreographer, she has choreographed in the US and in other countries like India and China. She offers different styles of dance, ranging from ballet, jazz, jazz funk to hip hop and contemporary dance and can be seen in the opening number for the 2023 Kids Choice Awards working with Bebe Rexha and of course has shared her talents with students in SG public schools teaching Hip Hop to middle school students.

Congratulations Kelly on your much deserved success! We are so happy for you and cannot thank you enough for sharing your expertise, energy and talent with our students. You are a bright and shining star!!

Sending huge thanks to the Gabrielino High School Chamber Choir and Jefferson Middle School Choir for providing guests at the Read. Imagine. Design. Celebratory Event with what we can only describe as ALL THINGS AMAZING!! The passion and talent the students display each and every time they perform is nothing short of fabulous! A great big shout out to JMS Music Teacher Ms. Rachel Chew and GHS Music Teacher Mr. David Pitts for all that they do for their students, their schools and for Foundation. They are both incredibly brilliant and kind and caring and simply stated give the most fabulous gift of music to their students each and every day. The impact they have on their students is grand and it shows!!

At the end of the fun filled event, SEF Board President Paul Kwo gifted each of the teachers with a $500 grant towards their respective school site music programs. The applauds in the audience were “forte” and we loved it!!
